Wood as a design material – Liam Kelly

This toolkit aims to reinforce the premise that the process of design is inseparable from the nature of the material.

We will be exploring the challenges of designing within the constraints of wood, aiming to create an item of furniture that uses no other materials.

In the toolkit we will explore the qualities of wood through experiment and research. We will design by doing - shaping bolsa, plywood and paper with hand tools.

The learning environment will be studio based where we will sketch and manually make things. There will also be talks on wood technology and site visits to wood industries.

There will be no CAD.

Assessment will be ongoing, as well as on presentation of a bolsa, plywood or paper scale models and freehand concept sketches.
